Powering Regional Australia with Renewable Hydrogen: Denham Case Study
In this webinar, we will look at the development of Horizon Power’s Denham Hydrogen Demonstration Plant, an exciting project delivered in partnership with the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) and the WA Government.
Attendees will learn about Australia’s first renewable hydrogen demonstration plant in a remote power system and why Denham was selected to test hydrogen’s technical capability as a dispatchable power source in remote microgrids.
Denham’s current diesel-generated power station is supplemented by a wind farm and rooftop solar, making it an ideal candidate for this demonstration project. However, the aged power station and power supply assets have mostly reached end-of-life, coupled with the high cost of operation, has led Horizon Power to seek reliable, economical solutions that prioritise the use of alternative fuels and renewable energy.
The use of hydrogen to capture and store excess renewable energy and then convert it to electricity provides a viable alternative to the continued consumption of diesel.
Once upgrades and construction are complete, the demonstration plant will utilise solar and renewable hydrogen generation and storage to provide dispatchable renewable electricity to the Denham community. The plant will generate approximately 520 MWh per year from its dedicated solar farm and fuel cell, the equivalent energy used to power 100 homes.
In this session, insights shared will help attendees to determine what opportunities may exist elsewhere in Australia for local governments, businesses, and organisations to initiate similar projects and hydrogen generation systems.
