Decarbonising Heavy Industry: Hydrogen and the HiTeMP-5 Forum with Professor Gus Nathan
The Hydrogen Society of Australia hosted a free online Hydrogen Links webinar exploring the technologies, partnerships and practical pathways required to decarbonise Australia’s heavy industries.
In this session, Professor G.J. ‘Gus’ Nathan introduced the High Temperature Minerals Processing Forum, HiTeMP-5, and discussed its role in advancing the transition towards net-zero industrial production.
Heavy industries such as iron and steel, cement, lime, alumina and aluminium rely on energy-intensive, high-temperature processes that are among the most difficult parts of the economy to decarbonise. The webinar examined how HiTeMP-5 brings together leading researchers, industry representatives and government agencies to explore complementary solutions including hydrogen, electrification, alternative fuels, net-zero heat, carbon capture and circular production systems.

Professor Nathan is Director of the Centre for Energy Technology at Adelaide University and Research Director of the Heavy Industry Low-carbon Transition Cooperative Research Centre. He is also a member of the HiTeMP-5 International Steering Committee and a recognised leader in industrial decarbonisation.
